Amazon S3: Object Storage in AWS

By
Last Modified Date

Amazon S3 is Amazon’s way of providing industry-leading object storage with high performance, scalability, and security inside of AWS. S3 stands for Simple Storage Service, the name rightfully implies that all data types can be supported on the service. Unlike general operating systems, S3 stores data not in a regular file system, but as objects. This ensures that the platform is flexible irrespective of the operating system it is being accessed from and won’t differ.

The service is designed for the backup and archiving of data used for cloud applications on AWS. Overall, the Amazon S3 feature set was kept smaller to make large-scale computing easier for developers.

Benefits of Amazon S3

Industry Leading Solution

AWS is currently providing the leading cloud solutions in the industry. A major advantage of using S3 is the 99.999999999% (that’s 9 decimal places) durability of data.  They keep multiple fail-safes present to make this number a reality, like storing copies of all S3 objects across numerous zones. This means that you can rest assured that your data will always be safe and secure on Amazon’s servers.

Data can also consistently be read after being written consistently at no additional cost on your part. This does not even compromise on the performance and availability of said data.

Rigorous Security and Compliance

AWS is packed with encryption features that make it inaccessible to the unauthorized, with access management tools to handle them all.

S3 Block Public Access allows users to do what the name states to all of their objects. This can be done at either the account or the bucket level.

Amazon S3 takes part in many compliance programs like FISMA, EU Data Protection Directive, PCI-DSS, and more.

Integration with Amazon Macie is also present to protect sensitive data using AWS machine learning and artificial intelligence. Auditing capabilities are also built-in to monitor requests made to your S3 objects.

Easy Data Management

S3 provides you with a number of tools that make the data management process a breeze.

S3 Data Access Points allows you to set permissions on your stored applications using a shared data set.

With S3 Replication, you can replicate data in the same or to other regions of your choice.

S3 Batch Operations facilitates the changes to billions of objects at a time for large scale use.

S3 Storage Lens is a unique tool that displays trends for the data for organizational use.

Using Amazon S3 with AWS Lambda lets you automate workflows without handling any additional infrastructure.

Amazon S3 Storage Class Types

S3 Standard

The standard storage for data that still needs to be retrieved often with high availability rates of 99.99%. This is the general option that most users will gravitate towards when storing objects.

S3 Standard IA (Infrequent Access)

This is storage for data that has slightly infrequent use, recommended for data that can be unused for 30 days. When the need arises, the data can still be recovered at a quick enough rate. This option has a lower cost of storage but a slightly higher cost when it comes to data recovery. Data is stored across 3 availability zones.

S3 One Zone IA

This is identical to Standard IA but is instead stored in one availability zone, making it a low-cost option.

S3 Intelligent Tiering

Intelligent Tiering automatically checks how often data has been accessed. This changes the storage class from Standard to Standard IA as needed so that pricing can be done accordingly.

S3 Glacier

This is where you can initiate the archival of data for long term use. Storage of data that does not necessarily require retrieval or immediate access belongs in this class. Rates are even lower than One Zone IA but you can face penalties for withdrawing data within the 90-day limit.

S3 Glacier Deep Archive

A version of S3 Glacier that is catered to files you would never need instantly. The restore time for data could take more than 12 hours for this very reason. However, this is the S3 offer with the lowest rate possible, cheaper than all of the above.

Summing Up

With Amazon S3 you can store as much data as you desire, the size of your business matters not. Data is always durable, available, and has numerous storage classes to choose from with just what you need. You can rest easy knowing that all of your data is safe on Amazon’s secure servers and are available for retrieval as needed.

Amazon S3 acts as the best location to keep your storage, whether for applications or for archives.
